Deborah Gerstler Spanierman, AAA, has been a specialist in American Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture for over 35 years. She is a Certified Member of the Appraisers Association of America in that specialty, and is also accredited to appraise Postwar, Contemporary, and Emerging Art, as well as Fine Art Prints. She has extensive experience in both the auction and retail markets

Spanierman began her career in 1987 at Sotheby’s, New York, in the American Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture Department, where she advanced from department assistant to cataloguer. Her responsibilities included cataloguing works of art for sale, conducting research and valuation, producing auction catalogues, and managing quarterly auctions.

From 1993 to 2002, she served as Associate Director of Spanierman Gallery, LLC, a prominent New York gallery specializing in American 19th- and early 20th-century art. There, she sold works to private collectors, museums, and corporations; acquired pieces through purchase and consignment; curated exhibitions both in the gallery and at traveling venues; and managed artists’ estates. She also oversaw consignments and museum loans, organized inventory, and handled marketing, installation, and events.

Since 2007, she has served as President of DGS Fine Art Consultants, Inc., (soon to be rebranded as Deborah Gerstler Spanierman & Associates, Inc.) a company specializing in fine art appraisal, brokerage, and advisory services. She regularly prepares USPAP-compliant appraisals for insurance scheduling, damage and loss claims, estate planning, estate tax settlements, non-cash charitable donations, equitable distribution, collateral loans, and litigation and expert witness services. In her advisory role, she assists collectors with acquisitions and sales, provides market research and documentation, and oversees framing, installation, and conservation.

She is a Past President of the Board of Directors of the Appraisers Association of America, where she served as a board member for 12 years,  and currently serves on several professional committees. Her USPAP qualification is valid until January 11, 2026. She has been quoted in Artsy.net, Maine Antiques Digest, Westchester Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal, and has appeared as an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow. Most recently, she served on the Editorial Committee for the Appraisers Association’s publication, Appraising: The Definitive Guide to Valuing Fine Art, Decorative Arts, & Collectibles (2024).

She is also a committee member of the forthcoming Willard LeRoy Metcalf Catalogue Raisonné Project, Inc., working alongside Betty Krulik and Dr. Lisa N. Peters.
