Art historian specializing in postwar American and European art with a focus on catalogue raisonné scholarship. Costello is the editor and project director of The Jasper Johns Catalogue Raisonné of Drawing (2018); senior editor of the Arshile Gorky Catalogue Raisonné of Painting, Drawing, Prints, and Objects (November 2021); and is presently working with Yve-Alain Bois on the Ellsworth Kelly Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, Sculpture, and Reliefs. She is the author of a monograph on Brice Marden (2013) and has contributed numerous essays to gallery exhibition catalogues, The Brooklyn Rail, and book reviews for The Burlington.
She received her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010; her dissertation was on postwar collaboration between abstract expressionist painters and modernist architects. Dr. Costello has taught at Hunter College, City University of New York, and has lectured at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and the Menil Collection and Drawing Institute, Houston.
